Malcolm Thomas Webster:
(born
Melbourne 1949)
In
the field of traditional fine watercolours,
Victorian Artist Malcolm Webster is currently
enjoying the fruits of his success. His passion
for his work and his rapid rise in popularity
both with art lovers and judges has won him
Melbourne’s top three Awards in a row:
The
Camberwell Rotary Australian Watercolour
Landscape Award in 2003, and this year, the St
Kevin’s College Watercolour Award and the Mt
Waverley Watercolour Award.
Investors in Malcolm’s work will also be pleased
at this news as they will continue to enjoy
viewing their collectable pieces for many years
to come while rising in value.
A
graduate in Art and Design from RMIT (1970),
Malcolm Webster first gained recognition as a
young designer with his first prize winning
entry at the National GMH Craftsman’s Guild
competition. This constituted a string of highly
prestigious medals (The Australian Design Award
and General Motors Design Award) won for
Malcolm’s contribution to the field of design
and craftsmanship.
Malcolm’s gift for visualisation and drawing
sparked early interest in painting. In 1985,
Malcolm’s then private practice (Designcare Pty
Ltd) expanded its services from product design
to illustrating and painting. During this time
Malcolm gave lectures in illustration and
perspective drawing at The National Institute of
Design at Swinburne University.
At
this time, Malcolm produced and sold over 2000
limited edition prints and originals, through
coastal galleries and in 1987, Malcolm further
broadened his clientele and began architectural
realistic photo simulations. Malcolm worked as a
full time architectural illustrator for Vic
Roads, Parks Victoria, Petroleum and Mining
companies, Architects, Town planners, private
developers and numerous major government
projects.
In
his first entry to a show in 1996, Malcolm won
the Sherbrooke McCubbin Award. This set
Malcolm’s new path in painting. From 1999 he has
won over 100 Awards for his distinct and popular
watercolours. He has recently commenced
workshops in watercolour technique for art
societies and select students and is currently
renewing his interests in Oil painting.
His
work is held in private collections, permanent
regional gallery collections and has been
featured in Australian Artist Magazine. In the
last two years Malcolm has ten exhibitions to
his credit.
Using the skills honed by his professional
career in illustration, Malcolm’s work has a
heightened sense of accuracy and perspective
detail. His work is not created in the orthodox
way of most water colourists. Malcolm uses a
complex range of manual techniques and materials
in harmony with the brush to richly extend this
wonderful medium. Malcolm’s work is also on
display at David Sumner Gallery-Adelaide, Jenny
Pihan Fine Art-Frankston, Adele’s
Gallery-Canterbury, and The Australian Guild of
Realist Artists in Camberwell, where he is a
member and retired councillor.
